* Flexibility – one of the biggest selling points of coated steel is its flexibility. It can be moulded, bent or shaped into a myriad of shapes, making it one of the most easily used pieces in building design. As it’s also manufactured in panels, it can be designed to interlock smoothly, or ‘tile’ depending on needs. Overlapping or flush depends on the installation type, and the material, but both can provide superior protection externally against the rain and other elements.
* Permeability – or lack of permeability. In most cases, permeability is a bad thing with cladding, so the better the ability to repel moisture or other weather is a definitive plus. With coatings and other products ensuring that the material is up to the highest of standards when it comes to penetration prevention, metal claddings rate the highest for those needs. Installed correctly it’s very difficult for anything to penetrate, but what little does, special channels can be drilled into the wall, to allow any condensation, or driven materials out from behind the envelope.
* Envelopes are easier to construct, can be secured with the minimum of fuss, and can be on a frame or attached direct to pre-existing building, but most importantly, can be designed to meet almost any need.
On the surface at least, metal cladding and roof cladding is possibly an ideal solution to most problems in the building industry, especially around things such as renovation, but looking deeper there are additional benefits.
* Metal products can be coloured, textured and patterned, cut and shaped in a variety of ways, or can be bent into geometric shapes that would be difficult or impossible to build – they may be too difficult to support, or in other ways too difficult to create or build in other materials but work well in metal cladding. Similarly, buildings with odd edges or geometric anomalies, such as curves are easier to create in metal cladding than other materials.
Overall, cladding is one of the most versatile and important elements in today’s construction industry. Whether for practical or decorative reasons, you can make a good case for roof cladding and exterior cladding and metal panels in general being some of the best building materials available today.
